My journey into bento lunch boxes

I know that the bittergourd is not everyone’s idea of a favourite vegetable but I like it! This bento was prepared in the morning with a quick sitrfry of thinly sliced bittergourd with egg and bonito flakes . I was surprised at how quick it was to prepare!
I served it on a bed of hot white rice and accompanied by some fried chicken pieces topped with a dollop of chilli sauce. I absolutely enjoyed my lunch!

During the Chinese New Year, arrowroot or nga ku is in abundance. Many people slice them and deep fry them into chips. I like them stirfried with lean meat. So, when I made them for dinner one day I made sure to have some leftover to bring to work. I had stirfried arrowroot (nga ku) with meat, white rice and watercress soup.

Here’s a bonus picture of my soup – watercress with pork ribs. Yummy! I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch especially as it was all relatively warm when removed from my new Thermos flask lunch box.

16 Feb 2009I came across this promotion and I have to share.

Isetan has a promotion for Lock and Lock lunch bags (link) The bags are thermal bags to keep your food warm or cool until lunch. The set in the promotion is RM38.90 for a thermal bag with 2 slim boxes and 1 water bottle (usual price RM69.90).
One of the boxes has no partitions and the other box is partitioned into 3 non adjustable partitions. I did not get this one as I found the boxes a little on the small side and I did not like the idea of non movable partitions. I also did not have need for a water bottle.
But if its for a kid or someone who is a smaller eater, its an excellant buy. The promotion is at Isetan KLCC and Lot 10 in limited quantities and is available from now to February 25, 2009.
I bought another set for RM49.90 which was bigger and had 3 boxes in a thermal bag. I’ll show pictures of it soon.

I call this my East meets West bento lunch because the steamed herbal chicken and blanched greens is very eastern whilst the tomato based pasta shells are very western! The steamed herbal chicken was made the night before and merely heated up in the morning, and the green vegetables blanched in hot water with a dash of soy sauce. The pasta shells were actually a leftover item. It didn’t taste too strange together…
